As an online volunteer teacher, I have had the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of young people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and instability. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding. The children I have worked with are eager to learn, despite the difficult circumstances they are facing. I have been impressed by their resilience and determination.
Teaching internally displaced and refugee children can be a complex and emotional experience. Many of these children have experienced trauma, and their families have gone through a lot to get them to safety. As a teacher, I have tried to create a safe and supportive learning environment for these kids, where they can learn and grow, despite their experiences.
One of the biggest challenges of teaching online to internally displaced and refugee children has been the lack of resources and technology. Some of the children I have taught do not have access to computers or stable internet connections. Despite these obstacles, I have tried to be creative and adapt to their needs, using the tools and resources that are available to us.
Despite these challenges, I have also seen the benefits of online learning. The children I have taught have gained valuable skills, such as using technology and speaking English, which will help them in their future studies and careers. I have also seen the positive impact that learning can have on their mental and emotional well-being. Many of these children have faced a lot of uncertainty in their lives, and being able to focus on learning has been a source of comfort and stability for them.
In conclusion, volunteering as an online teacher for internally displaced and refugee kids in Ukraine, Myanmar, and Afghanistan has been a truly eye-opening experience. While it can be challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding to know that I am making a difference in these children's lives. The resilience and determination of these kids is truly inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their journey.”

I was drawn to volunteer by the idea of providing quality lessons to students whose education was interrupted by war or political unrest. Being a passionate educator with years of teaching experience in Canadian schools, it was my chance to help in my area of expertise. It was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and youth around the world.
Since I started my volunteer work in April of 2022, I have taught and presented workshops to Ukrainian children and teachers. Their curiosity to learn in unfortunate circumstances is inspiring. I always look forward to seeing curious faces and meeting kids and teachers who demonstrate perseverance and optimism. They show initiative to participate and engage in lessons despite broken microphones, sirens, and blackouts. They model strength and resilience, and I am fortunate to work with them. I am grateful that they always show up.
I continue to learn and improve my teaching practices: virtually and using trauma informed approaches while creating welcoming and engaging lessons. I am being rewarded with a clear vision for the world, enjoyment of my work, privilege to watch eager learners and confidence that I am supporting those in need.
